Build A French Capsule Wardrobe For Spring

Build A French Capsule Wardrobe For Spring

It's almost Spring here in central New York!  I love Spring.  It's a time for renewal and growth and enjoying a warm breeze and sunshine.  Warmer weather also means we should take a look at our wardrobe and prep it for sunny days.

So let's do a Spring Wardrobe Refresh, this time leaning a little French...ooh la la. The French are known for their timeless and effortless style, so it’s no surprise that their wardrobe staples are the same. To achieve a chic French look for Spring, start with the basics.

For tops, opt for neutral tees in white, black, navy and/or gray, silk camisoles, a striped shirt or sweater, a classic white (or neutral striped) button down, floral blouses and either fitted or oversized lightweight, soft cardigans. This combination of staple tops provides a great balance between casual and dressy, which is key for creating an effortless French look.

For bottoms, keep the blue denim straight leg jeans that are perfect year round and add in a pair of white denim and a pair of tan or beige trousers in linen, cotton or lightweight wool.

You'll definitely want to include skirts & dresses in your Spring wardrobe.  Small floral prints are perfect for midi & maxi skirts and wrap dresses.  A slip dress is versatile when you add a lightweight sweater or cardigan over it on cooler days.  These options are so feminine and pretty and can be worn as a casual outfit or dress it up just by swapping out your shoes!

When it comes to outerwear, a trench coat and a lightweight blazer are must-haves for any French wardrobe.  These timeless pieces complete any look and can be worn with almost anything.

For footwear, you can never go wrong with a pair of ballet flats.  Neutral colors are classic staples but have fun and go with a bright pair for a pop of color.  I also like loafers with jeans and tailored pants. Espadrilles & sandals are perfect for dresses and skirts, while low heeled slingbacks are a bit more dressy.  And of course, minimalist canvas or leather white sneakers. They're comfortable and go with everything, even dresses!

Finally, accessorize with a leather tote or a classic straw bag and some sunglasses.  The French use silk scarves to add a bit of color or pattern and there are so many ways to wear them.  Tie them in your hair, around your neck or around the handle of your bag.  As for jewelry, you can't go wrong with simple gold hoop earrings and a gold pendant necklace. These items are all timeless and versatile and they won't go out of style.

When choosing fabrics, go for natural materials like linen, silk, cotton and cashmere. These fabrics are comfortable, light and add a touch of luxury to your look.

With these key pieces, you’ll be sure to create a chic French look for Spring.
